I was invited to give a talk, which I titled “LIS Values: Access, Equity, and Social Justice” at today’s Beta Phi Mu Initiation for our students in the School of Information Sciences. As the website exaplains, Beta Phi Mu “was founded in 1948 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by a group of leading librarians and library educators.” I just upload the talk with the presentation slides to IDEALS, our institutional repository for research and scholarship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Your initiation into Beta Phi Mu provides you with a unique opportunity to make a difference in your communities by embracing access, equity, and social justice as values that matter in our field. When we embrace access, equity, and social justice as core values in our field we are decentering whiteness in LIS.
